Exercise: Opening Lines

5 minute simple as possible line drawings of various objects / myself and then composing onto an A3 piece of paper

Reflections:

  • I started out planning the objects with lighter pencil first and then going over in as many simple bold lines as possible but realised I was using too many lines so for the next drawing I tried to mark out edges and spaces before directly drawing the bold lines – particularly since the drawings were getting more complicated and thus 5 minutes was not much time!
  • With the folded trousers I tried making basic forms first to capture the size and main elements and then drew bold lines around it which worked really well
  • for the portrait since I didnt have time to go full loomis method, I tried to frame the hair and facial space first and then the detail inside
  • Its not easy to draw so quickly but it was good to be forced to be quick
  • I found organic shapes easier to capture than man made and straight lines even with the help of a ruler
  • The vase and the trousers are a bit too big for the composition but this was the best way to create a fore, mid and background in the most realistic composition
