Assignment 3: Large drawing based on exploratory work

Reflecting on my work so far:

  • Definitely prefer and enjoyed the more nature-based landscapes
  • Decided to build on the Scottish landscapes I had been practicing with tonal studies
  • Really enjoyed the atmospheric perspective and approach, want to apply it
  • Inspired by impressionism and some of the more modern abstract/surreal/fantastical landscapes focusing the below specific works though it bothers me that none of these artists are women!
    • Monet’s Haystacks at Hiver (Atmospheric perspective and expressive mark making)
    • Van Gogh’s Starry Night (curvy-mark making)
    • Ferdinand Hodler’s (funky clouds)
    • David Hockney’s Garrowby Hill (Exaggerated curves and rolling hills and farmland)
    • Giovanni Giacometti’s Lake Engadin (Intense colours and light pointillism)
    • Eric Ravillious’ rolling hills (rolling hills and contours)
  • Media choice ideas:
    • Pastel in layers
    • Pastel and conte
    • pastel and bolder oil pastel for foreground?
    • oil pastel? might be too bold for the atmospheric approach
    • Water colour pencil? probably not bold/deep enough coloured for what I prefer
    • more surreal and use pens/alcohol markers/poscas?
    • Charcoal for a black and white monochrome approach? Prefer colour..

Tied out some thumbnails, formats and styles – I went for a more ‘rolling’ effect with more exaggerated curves then tried out some media combinations: pastel, oil pastel, neon water colour crayons, water colour pencil and tried to get some nice colour combinations

I did a smaller study of what I was going for also trying out materials and noting things I wanted to fix moving forward. My main issues was choosing paper as I could not find water colour paper bigger than A3 so I had to try A2 cartridge paper.

Water colour pencil, neon crayon water colour, oil pastel and a tiny bit of acrylic paint for the white cloud:

Reflections:

  • Water colour paper would have probably worked better
  • pastel then oil pastel doesn’t work that well as it rubs off the pastel
  • Water colour of any kind when dry provides a good base for other media on top
  • was trying to stylise more though I could have exaggerated the fence even more I think to really make it more central and bigger at the left
  • Difficult getting the tones and blue-green gradation for the atmospheric perspective I was trying for as a lot of dark, shadow and colours in the middle section were brighter than some of the closer elements.
  • Wonder if taking out the dark trees in the middle or making them less evident would help the aerial perspective even if this is more true to the photo
  • Tried out another drawing using pastel only and really using short stubby strokes to be more impressionist and I warped the colours more and tried to be more abstract
  • Still struggle to apply colour tone thickly – above could have been bolder I think
  • Harder to be abstract than I thought! I kept verging towards trying to be realistic
