Exercise: What I want and need from this course

In this introductory exercise, I am being asked to reflect on and share what I want and need from this course on Drawing Skills.

Essentially, as I went through my previous course in Key Steps in Illustration, and while I do have drawing experience, I still felt that I wanted to enhance my drawing skills.

Exercises like fast or timed sketches or drawing real life were really helpful to loosen up my drawing but I still want to push this further. Reflecting on what I had to do for the previous course and what I learned in High School quite a few years back now, I recognise that I don’t have much experience with portraits or human form and I have been very used to drawing from still life or photos with plenty of time to spare and so am very shy about drawing outside.

I also have never really used drawing to explore objects or subjects, it has always been quite a classic objective drawing approach so I am really looking forward to this aspect of the course which I am sure will help me strengthen my practice.

I also really want to find again the joy in drawing. When I was younger I used to read and draw and paint all the time and without the pressure of perfection either. If I can relax into drawing and enjoy it, and experiment, I hope it will also bring me pleasure as well as improvement!
